After the Chocolate eggs have gone.

Well Easter has been and gone the Custodians are feeling fat from all the Easter eggs that they eat and the wildfowl are finding a nesting site to lay their eggs . Here at the Castle we had a busy time welcoming many visitors to the Monument including Margaret John who played Doris in Gavin and Stacey who visited on one of our Event days with her family.

The Company of Chivarly and Bowmen of the Rose put on a fine show which included for the first time Payn de Turberville ( Custodian of the Castle in 1315 ) and Llywelyn Bren who attacked the Castle in 1316, if you missed it catch it again on 30th & 31st May, will Llywelyn manage to take the Castle this time, or will he end up in the Tower of London once again?

Well Easter is nearly here and for many people its time for a welcome break.... So after a heavy days` shopping on Friday and watching your favourite sporting event on Saturday , why not visit Caerphilly Castle on Sunday 4th and Monday 5th April where you will be able to see our might siege engines in action and siege warfare displays brought back to life by members of The Company of Chivalry and the Bowman of the Rose.

Normal admission prices apply and for those of you that have not been to the Monument in the past 6 months , the Inner East Gatehouse and the De Broase gallery are now open, so there a great deal more Castle to explore, you will be able to go out on to the highest point and have a 360 degree view of Caerphilly and the surrounding area, stand in the Great Chamber where Lords and Kings once slept, walk along the gallery where servants would of scurried along for their Lords and Ladies and it`s here only a few weeks ago filming with Matt Smith the new Dr Who himself took place.

Looking forward to Christmas and thought it a good time to look back at the past year as Cauldrons and Furnaces has taken shape. Futura, a full Cultural Olympiad project to be run by Caerphilly Borough Council, is led by the artist Sean Tuan John and was awarded the London 2012 Inspire Mark by Jonathan Edwards on October 29th at the Castle itself.

Jonathan Edwards at Caerphilly Castle

Jonathan met with children working on a Cauldrons and Furnaces art project with artist Eric Heyman.

Jonathan also took the opportunity to see the colourful banners in the Great Hall, created by Caerphilly schoolchildren as part of previous workshops inspired by the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad.

Inspire Mark awarded to Cauldrons & Furnaces project

Former British triple jumper, Olympic Gold medallist and London 2012 Nations and Regions Group Deputy Chair Jonathan Edwards CBE launched celebrations around 1000 Days To Go to the London 2012 Games by visiting Caerphilly Castle by meeting people from the south Wales region who are inspired by and benefiting from the Games.

Jonathan officially launched celebrations around Cadw’s 25th anniversary at Wales’ largest Castle, Caerphilly Castle, where he awarded an Inspire Mark - the badge of the Inspire programme which recognises projects and events inspired by London 2012 - to the Cauldrons and Furnaces project. The Castle is one of the locations for the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad inspired Cauldrons and Furnaces initiative, which Cadw is delivering in partnership with the Arts Council of Wales over four years.
